Revisiting Archimede

Back in 19-20' I came across Archimede when searching for German made watches in my hunt for a pilots watch. After sometime I settled on the Laco Paderborn. I also noticed their other watches but moved on.

I have revisited Archimede and have a stronger feeling about their watches, especially the OutDoor model. I first took to the SportTaucher but I already have 2 dive watches, and I realize it doesn't mean I can't have a 3rd.

I'm really digging the OutDoor model and for the value. I realize Sinn is probably tops but the value Archimede brings to the table cannot be ignored.

Do you guys find yourself coming back to a brand liking them more than when you first looked? This seems to be the case for other watch brands I have searched but then later come back with a different opinion.

Any OutDoor wrist shots by chance?

Purchased an AntiMag with a hardened SS bracelet. Obviously, like many, I was drawn to Archimede due to the Ickler name and reputation.

The finishing on the case is beautifully done. The movement has been keeping between +2 to +5 sec/day. The lume is very bright; not the brigest I've seen, but it'll stay visible most of the night.

My one gripe with the watch is the bracelet push clasp. For whatever reason, the push clasp works inconsistently. I have read other owners with Archimede OutDoor bracelets voiced similar problems with the clasp.

Anyways, a great watch overall - but in hindsight, I would avoid spending the extra cash on the SS bracelet. My two cents.

wrist size is about 7"

They are a bit of a underrated brand in my opinion. But very good value. They make fantastic cases (Ickler cases). I owned their 1950-2 dress watch a few years ago.

as I’m in the hunt for a chronograph watch I’ve been looking at their pilot chronos again

hawkeye87,

Thanks for the in-depth information. Good to hear the movement is keeping time as though it was a top grade movement. It fits your wrist well and I have a 7 1/8".

There are many brands that still have the older style clasp but they should at least function without issue. Having the option for hardening is nice but it doesn't help when the clasp doesn't work correctly. More and more if I like the watch my thought is to just buy it with either a leather, nato or rubber strap instead. The OutDoor offers this and based on the type of watch it is I would be OK with not having the bracelet.

Could you confirm the lug width of the watch is 21mm? They show a nato band on the watch but when you look at the size it says 20mm. The bands for the OutDoor do not show any nato options and say 21mm. Thanks in advanced. Just caught a YouTube that mentions the lug width is 20mm. Maybe the 21mm is the over hang vs the inside measurement.

IF having a good bracelet is a must then you have no choice to buy something different. That could end up costing you a lot more, and just for a functioning bracelet no less. Even Sinn has the older style clasp but I suspect it still works well.

The hooded lugs make it really hard to tell, but I bought a few 20mm rubber straps they fit perfectly - so 20mm is the way to go.

I would definitely go w/ the leather or NATO strap to save $$ and to avoid any quality-control issues that may arise with the metal clasp/bracelet. Good luck making a decision!

I bought an outdoor protect when they first came out. I sold it at some point and really regretted it.

i went to look at them today with the intention of buying another outdoor and saw the Klassic 200. This is the watch I have been looking for a long time. Classic looks, modern materials, not too big. I love the fact I can order it with a solid case back! Can’t decide between black or white, but definitely going to get one.

I think the company is seriously overlooked. They make some very solid watches.l am glad I went back and checked them out again.

I got excited to see Archimede offer a 42mm A or B dial in titanium. I love titanium and I want to buy a pilot watch; I'm not going to spend what IWC wants. I prefer a lug width of 22mm, and I really prefer to find a watch that has a bracelet for when I want to wear one. I also really like the Dekla pilots and they do match my size preference (42, 22) but no bracelet and b/c I'm in the US I'd have to order thru watchbuys - they have very little in stock and very few of the 42mm options.

I didn't want to create a new thread, so I'm resurrecting this one.

I saw a bunch of people in this thread with the Outdoor model. Hoping someone is still active. I have two questions:

1. Does anyone know if any bracelet (apart from the Archimede one) can fit the Outdoor model, given that it is a unique case with no lugs?

2. If the answer to the first question is yes, given that the case is hardened, is the color of the case significantly different from regular stainless steel? Again, I am asking because I am wondering if a non-Archimede stainless steel bracelet might look off on the watch if the case and bracelet color are visibly different.

@StufflerMike @Mediocre

Editing this to mention you guys, so you get a notification (sorry). Just saw you have these watches and was hoping you can answer these questions.

Here are some photos of mine. The watch does have lugs just realize they are hooded by the extended case and they are only 18mm. Both the bracelet and the rubber strap widen beyond the lugs to give them an integrated look. You could use any 18mm strap or bracelet that is thin enough that it doesn’t interfere with the hooded case extension but it might look small compared to the size of the case. As to color, I’ve included a photo of the watch next to my non-tegimented U50. I think the color is a pretty close match the Archimede just has a slick texture due to the coating. Hope these photos help! Just let me know if you need any others.

Thank you. That was very helpful. I am considering getting the 41 antimag and my understanding is that it has a 20 mm lug to lug, but it seems the bracelet extends to 23 mm to reach the exterior portion of the lugs on both sides. It seems like this makes getting a strap or a bracelet kind of an issue, because i assume given the integrated look it will probably look weird if it doesn't extend up to outside of both lugs. Do you happen to have an 18 mm strap or bracelet you can put on the watch so I can see how it would look?

Also, I didn't pay attention to this, but I am very surprised that the case back hasn't been hardened either. That is a strange omission.

Also, I want to buy this Vulcain bracelet, which I really like, but to justify the $350 cost I am trying to make it fit as many watches as possible or give a unique look to a watch, but it doesn't seem like it would fit the 41 mm version (apart from being 20 mm wide and might look weird anyway). Do you think there is any chance of this fitting?

Thanks again for the detailed reply!

I've owned a few Archimede Outdoor models over the last 10 years, but the 39mm version.

That Vulcain bracelet won't fit. For a bracelet to fit the Outdoor it has to have straight end links, not curved.

I recently had a PVD model Outdoor I wanted to add a bracelet to. I was able create a bracelet similar to the original with 20mm width but 18mm ends by purchasing two aftermarket bracelets of the same manufacturer and swapping the end links.

To answer the question about the color of hardened versus non hardened - I haven't noticed a difference.
