Citizen's HAQs are the spiritual successors to a 1960's accuracy-focused line of Chrono Master (with a space) models, as detailed in this web page .

I will slowly work backwards from the latest-gen time & perpetual calendar HAQ caliber A060, which is Citizen's mainline offering (not the dateless caliber 0100).

AQ409x models powered by caliber A060, generally released in 2022.

AQ4090-59E Ti, complex dark dial, 40.0 x 12.2 mm, LE of 400
(movement-case ref A060-T027041)
Image

AQ4091-56A Ti, white dial, 40.0 x12.2 mm
AQ4091-56E Ti, black dial, 40.0 x12.2 mm
AQ4091-56L Ti, blue dial, 40.0 x12.2 mm

Image

AQ4091-56M Ti, indigo washi dial, 40.0 x12.2 mm
(movement case ref A060-T027351)

This generation is the largest that The Citizen got - out to 40.0 mm stated diameter. The subsequent AQ410x models shrank to 38.3mm, while stated thickness remained 12.2 mm.

Observation: AQ410x series debuted a new case shape. Compare the lugs. The AQ410x case seems to be following the caliber 0100 AQ6xxx case style inspired by the facets of a quartz crystal.

Also, the downsizing from the AQ409x series was accomplished by shrinking the horizontal size of the angled rehaut.

^^^ White gold, ultra limited, halo piece. I get it.

AQ407x series

AQ4070-05A Ti, Pt on washi dial, 38.3 x 12.2 mm*, LE of 350 (in 2020 for 25th anniversary of The Citizen)
(A060-T026486)
Image

This LE uses the 'new case' design with angular lugs that later appeared in the regular production AQ410x watches.

Besides the above lone model, I can find no other watches by internet search, save a passing WUS mention by @Domo of "the AQ4070, which was previously only available in a gold-toned DLC coating" which might refer to a different A060-powered watch such as the AQ4042-01P, not a AQ407x model.

Anyone familiar with my posts knows im a GS fanboy but if I ever bought another HAQ it'd be a The Citizen hands down. I think they look great.
They went through a dark period IMO when they lost all their branding and most had the PR meter on them (no offense, just not for me) but now they're using the eagle-looking critter which I like, or adding "Chronomaster" back on the dial and signing the crowns, coupled with the clear technical superiority of the 0100 movement, it's a no brainer for me

Speaking of the eagle, there was a change for the better from AQ405x to AQ406x , looking much less like a chicken

Also, some history of the meaning from an old post: the 'Eagle Mark' widely spreading feathers as a symbol of confidence and pride for Citizen's watch making was engraved. Only The CITIZEN is allowed to embrace Eagle Mark now. The letters of Eagle Mark and Chronomaster are proofs of pursuing high precision by enthusiasm as in those days, a symbol of self-confidence and pride."

Citizen seemed to be releasing steel and titanium series alternately during this time, with duratect steel priced lower. These steel watches at 10.1 are slightly thinner than their titanium contemporaries at 12.2 mm.

As mentioned above, the AQ406x series debuted a revised and simplified 'eagle' medallion on the caseback.

Note no eagles on the dial. That apparently resumed with the AQ4040-06A LE. 'Chronomaster' in cursive.

Two bits about the 4030…still had the detailed, complex eagle on the back… once the new models got the eagle on the dial, the eagle logo is now simplified and less intricate. Also, I have seen varying opinions whether this model used alpha titanium. I can tell you my metal is all but scratch free as I approach 2 years of wear with pretty hard use.

when it says Eco-drive is it confirmed it’s solar?
Yes, I believe that to be the case. 'Eco-Drive' = photovoltaic capability. Counting from the 1976 Crystron Solar Cell, Citizen marked the 40th anniversary in 2016 with of course a bunch of LE watches, including a JDM Exceed (ref AQ5000-13A), but that is a story for another day.

Perhaps due to some marketing effort at the time (2019) or perhaps in the afterglow of Citizen's 2018 centennial and/or the 2019 launch of the caliber 0100, the above three watches were reviewed by Time and Tide and Revolution.

(below added 11/6)

AQ4021-51W Ti, white "tosa unryuu" washi dial, 37.5 x 10.6 mm*, LE of 300, supplied with both bracelet and strap

AQ401x series does not seem to exist

AQ400x series being the inaugural watches of Citizen's new A060 movement which dropped the generally unpopular power reserve subdial, got some special dials

AQ4000-51A ss, champagne sunburst dial, 38.5 x 10.1 mm
Image

AQ4000-51L ss, black pinstripe dial, 38.5 x 10.1 mm
Image

AQ4000-51L ss, blue fume dial, 38.5 x 10.1 mm
Image

All ss cases were 'duratect' surface hardened. Note neither 'Chronomaster' nor eagle emblem on the dial. The crowns are also unsigned. All three models movement-case ref A060-T021417.

-51A and -51L photos from Gnomon Watches listing and review

(added later)
AQ4001-08A ss, eagle patterned white dial, 38.5 x 10.1 mm*, LE of 200 for 20th anniv of The Citizen (PR 2016/11)
(A060-T022839)

Barring additional discovered models, this concludes the caliber A060 models up to present day. Next: caliber A010.

I love everything denim so for me the indigo dial version is most attractive. But I hope the indigo dial is somehow treated as it's light fastness properties aren't great.

Your concern deserves more study. Citizen do address UV in general, but is that enough?

That AQ6110-10L is both the only non-LE caliber 0100 with strap and the only non-LE with display back. Having handled a Ti first series in the metal, I can tell you that the brushing is unbelievably even

Thanks for memorializing all of these models, @Mandaue, it's an interesting look back at a still underappeciated series from Citizen.

I can take or leave the eagle/chicken, but I LOVE the Chronomaster script on these. I hope it makes a return in future releases.
