Torn about the IWC Portuguesier Chronograph (with the green dial)

So, I'm struggling to decide if I should buy the Portuguesier Chronograph with the green dial, and having dwelt on this for a few weeks now, I'm turning to the community for advice.

Pros: I almost bought an IWC Portuguese (as it was called at the time) as my first watch, and I've always thought it was a very pretty watch. The one I was considering at the time was the white dial with the gold numbers, but now I'm looking at the green dial with the silver numbers. While I like both configurations, I admit that part of the appeal now is that that share of green is such a unique (and stunning) shade.

Cons: I already have an also stunning JLC Geographic that I'm trying to sell because I just don't find myself wearing it that often. (And I'm finding it difficult to sell, tbh.) For whatever reason, often when I'm going out, my default watch to reach for is one of my stainless steel Rolexes. I question whether this IWC would be lucky enough to have a different fate in my collection. And the cynical side of me wonders if I'm only buying this IWC in order to put another non-Rolex watch on my purchasing history with my dealer...

What're your thoughts on the IWC Portuguesier? How would you approach my quandary? Any thoughts or suggestions at all?

I don't know which model JLC Geographic you have, but I feel like this IWC falls into the same style. If your Geographic doesn't get any wrist time I'm not sure if you'll be wearing that Portugueser once you scratch the itch. If you feel like wearing your steel Rolexes just wear them and don't waste your money. Instead of selling JLC put it away for a while and see if you'll be missing it at one point. Remember that you can always sell. The question is how much money will be lost on this transaction

I have one and absolutely love it.
Mine is the silver/white dial with blue numerals.
The details on the dial are stunning and I find myself appreciating it more over time.

Do you think that you may wear it less though because of the green dial? I do enjoy a good dial but find that I may wear in less occasions than a blue or black dial.

I personally dont like the green, but that's very subjective. I'd much rather have the white with gold letters like you had originally wanted. Anyway, Watches aren't investments, if this purchase is a total loss and you're ok with that, buy it. But if this is some elaborate plan, where you buy something you think you'll like, increase purchase history, and try to hedge your bets and limit your losses, that I'd say you are better off enjoying what you've got already.

As far as the JLC goes, I'm sure you can trade that in with as part of the purchase of the IWC or something else. But of course the money they'd give you reflect how hard it'd be to sell the watch.

I also had a Portuguese and it is a beautiful watch, but I never found myself wearing it. Especially in the green and red versions it has a very dress vibe, but for such times I would always go with my gold watch. Also, the straps are very nice, but the black alligator just did not work for more casual wearing. For me, I rarely wore it.

Good luck on your choice.

I love IWC, love the Portugieser, and love a green dial when it’s done just right. That said, my suggestion for you would be to consider a different direction.

My reasoning for this is…
  • You are already concerned that the watch will not get wrist time. I’ve had a few watches over the years that have gotten less wrist time than I thought they would. It’s rare that it works the other way. Listen to the voice in your head.
  • It’s a fairly dressy watch. I think a green dial would be limiting. It would be less so on a sport watch.
  • I think the design itself should be the “show” on a piece like this. Such a classy and classic look. The green dominates, as the red does on the red dialed version. I’d go white or black dial.

BUT…there are several other green IWC models, all sportier than the Portugieser. Take a look at the Pilots Chrono. I have the prior gen LE which is 43mm and it’s a joy to wear. The current model is 41mm. There are also others in green, including a Big Pilot, Spitfire, etc.

Good luck!

I am in a similar situation. The IWC Portuguiser was one of the watches that I was attracted to when I first got into watches. I also considered the Chrono (blue hands on white dial) at the time but it wears too large for my wrist. Now that they have released the 40mm, I am going back to consider it again. One of my concerns is also the wear time of this piece. As much as I admire the design language, it is a dressier looking watch and I tend to wear sportier models most of the time.

When I visited the IWC boutique last week, one piece that struck me was the blue panda Portuguiser chrono on white lacquer dial. It is much sportier looking (also comes with a blue rubber strap) than the other Portuguiser. You may consider that as well if you are still hooked on the Portuguiser design.

Also drawn to the green Portugieser, probably the small seconds version. Beautiful color at least in the photos. I have a similar concern as raised earlier - it may be too dressy for me plus I have a couple of dress watches already. For that reason I would probably never buy a Reverso or a Cartier even though I admire them and they look magnificent with a suit.

The IWC looks great. I have not taken the plunge into green dials yet as my fear is it wont age well and then will be difficult to move without a heavy loss if decide to not keep any longer. Usually always leads me back to Blue dials.

So if you are already a little uncertain on how it ay fit into your wrist time rotation, maybe give it more time or spend some more time with one in person at an AD if you can to really be sure.

But i love the green!
