I've been wearing my brand new mint dial Traska Commuter for the past week and thought I'd share some thoughts about it. The executive summary is that it's great! It's comfortable, wears well and -- even with a mint dial -- is a pretty versatile piece. Like all Traskas, you get excellent value for money with the Commuter, although there are 1-2 negatives
Size and Case
I have a 6.75" wrist and I like smaller watches, so the 36mm fits my wrist well. YMMV. The Commuter is, in many ways, styled after the Rolex OP and, like the OP, the 36.5mm case works well. Lug to Lug is 44mm and the watch is only 10mm thick. As you can imagine from those dimension's, the watch is very easy to wear. As with all its models, Traska hardens the case and bracelet, and it really works! The case and bracelet tend to stay pretty pristine, unless you really try hard to scratch them. There are thoughtful touches, including small polished chamfers that separate radial brushed lugs from horizontally brushed sides. And its always good to have drilled lugs!
Bracelet
The bracelet is super comfortable and has fully articulated links, and four micro adjust holes on the clasp. The clasp has a double trigger to unlock it and feels solid. Again, the entire bracelet is hardened, which is something that other brands like Sinn charge a lot extra for. It's also good that the bracelet adjust with screws rather than those infernal pins, but there are issues with them (see below)
Dial
The dial is sold, if unspectacular. Obviously if you go for mint (it also comes in white, black and a really attractive "woodland green" that I maybe should have got) then the color sets it apart. With 100M water resistance and it's fairly conservative styling, the watch is a real GADA piece (especially in white or black dial models), but I thought some playful color would be a nice contrast to the conservative styling, and it mostly is. At times, I wish the mint dial were a bit darker, but mostly I really like it. It's nice that there's not too much text on the dial -- just the logo and brand name name at 12:00 and "Automatic" at 6:00 Indices are applied and filed with Swiss BGW9 lume
and the hands are as well. There is no date to spoil the symmetry of the dial
Value for Money
As I've said elsewhere before, Traska really deliver exceptional value for money. For $565 the commuter delivers on a lot of fronts -- hardened case and bracelet, microadjust on the clasp, screws not pins in the bracelet, good Swiss lume, Sapphire crystal, no date movement, 100M water resistance, drilled lugs, etc.
Quality Control
There are a couple of QC issues with the Commuter that other members have written about on the forum, and I've noticed both on mine. Neither is a deal breaker for me, and I believe others who are more bothered by them, have gotten good customer service from Traska. The first is that the screws to adjust the bracelet seem to be a bit soft. Some have reported stripping them, and I felt that I came damn close while adjusting my bracelet. I used a hair dryer to warm up the loctite that Trasks is rumored to use before shipping and the I used the correct size screw driver, and I could still see damage to the screws when I looked with my loupe. Second is that the screw down crown pops FAR out from the case when it is unscrewed, and it's a bit finicky to get it screwed back in again. I don't recall this problem with my other Traskas and am not sure what's going on with it.
Anyway, hope this is interesting and helpful for some of you. Great little watch, that brings you much of the aesthetic and the wearability of the OP 36 for less than 1/10th the price!
