Can't be done. Well, you could put a piece of paper between the spring and the piezo attached to the back cover, but then you would have no alarms. I have heard that some military people do this to avoid making noise at the wrong time.

One of the upgrades Casio made was giving the GW-6900 a mute function.

 

yep, pretty much this.

Open up the case back, remove the tiny spring for the buzzer. and you will permanently disable any noise from the watch.

There are models with mute function though. you should look into those if that's what you want.

 

Just realized that I had owned a Mudman G9000 and that had the option to turn off the button sounds.

Guess I need to crack open the case again and pull out the spring...

 

Useful info - I would never have found that out as I like my Gs to beep.

 

I have an old G Shock and took it apart for some maintenance and accidentally put the case back on upside down. It is symmetrical so it seemed like a tight fit but it did disable the sound. I removed it and corrected the orientation and this restored the sound.

 

Reason is simple. If you have a look at the inside of the case back, it will have some white insulation stuck on it - when you inverted it, the insulation then rested against the 'alarm' spring which prevented it earthing, hence the muting of the sound. When yoiu put it the correct way round, all was right with the world again...

 

On the GW6900 atomic solar (3179), button beeping can be turned on and off by going into normal timekeeping mode, and pushing the set button (upper left). Then you press the lower left button to scroll through the various settings, which include backlight duration, power saving mode function on/off, etc. One of them is the button beeping, which comes just after the day setting (last time/calendar setting) and just before the 1 or 3 second illumination duration setting. Looked at the manual for the DW6900 (1289) and verified there is no setting to turn the button beep off. As described by others, the spring contacting the back facilitates the beeping. The "white" thing in the back is the annunciator that does the beeping. Cover over the bare spot the spring contacts with removable tape, or a piece of paper like a small Post-It note, and the beeping will stop, along with all alarms, hourly signal, timer ending, etc. I don't recommend removing the spring as they're all but impossible to replace if lost. Better to insulate the back from it with something that won't rip the annunciator off or damage it when you remove it (i.e. don't use duct tape or Gorilla tape).
