Westclox Scotty Style 4 Pocket Watch, serial number location?

I recently acquired a Westclox Scotty pocket watch for my birthday and was interested in possibly finding some information on it. I had the back cover off and discovered that there was no obvious serial number, the only thing I could see was a "Made in U.S.A," and two marks that could make out to be 11. I was curious if anybody knew anything about these, besides the fact that they are cheap. I dialed it in to keep the time right to the second, but unfortunately I believe the spring is overwound even though the watch is running fine.

don3194...Hello. To my knowledge ( and experience ) these watches did not have Serial Numbers...I have seen many, however, that are clearly stamped with a date...frequently, Month and Year.

Your Scotty looks to me to quite possibly date from the 1960's. If you'll take a look down around the "11", perhaps you'll spy another number...the "11" could well be November...now, we'll need a Year!

And: I like these watches. They are from a different Era , and I rather appreciate their history and Honesty. Michael.

Thank you Michael Maddan and bsshog40! I have found a second number under one of the gears, and I was able to make an assumption based on the style of the watch and the years that they made it. In the picture I could easily make out the number four as the second digit. As for the first digit I would assume that it would be a seven due to that being the only number between seven, eight, and nine to generally have a straight tail or bottom to it.

Westclox Scotty Style 4 Pocket Watch, stops if held vertically?

I have Westclox Scotty Style 4 Pocket Watch, now identified as being made in November of 1974, and at first I thought the watch was fine and I was getting it loosened up for its first use in a while. I had it running for a while, but it runs very slow in the first few hours after wind up, then it starts to keep time ok, but then it continually slows down and speeds up. I thought that maybe the main spring was stuck to itself, until I discovered that if I hold the watch vertically, it keeps ticking for a few seconds then makes a slight rubbing sound (almost like grinding) and quits. Would anybody here have an idea as to what might be happening?

Re: Westclox Scotty Style 4 Pocket Watch, stops if held vertically?

don3194...this Good Old Fellow needs a Service... a cleaning & some oil! However: with this movement, that's easier said than done: it's riveted together, and designed to be not at all easy to work on...if, indeed, worked on at all!

But, all is not lost. My guess is that this movement may be 'cleaned' without taking it apart...I'd try an ultrasonic bath with proper watchmaking cleaning solution, followed by an ultrasonic rinse or two in a proper rinsing solution. Then, everything would need to be dried completely...which could take awhile! The fact that the mainspring is exposed, leads me to assume that this type of cleaning was considered by the manufacturer: the spring may be thoroughly cleaned / dried / oiled.

The areas where watches are oiled are available here without disassembly ( after the dial is removed, of course...)...and, really, don't you think that the design of this watch is such, that little if any maintenance was ever contemplated....so that, even if the ( less than ideal...!) procedure I've suggested here was tried, it would give the old fellow much more than was ever imagined?

I hope this turns out OK...PM me if you'd care to...I would be willing to TRY to clean this watch for you...it just might turn out fine! Michael.

Her is another Westclox that I have also. Can't figure out the date as I can't see it. I know it's December but the year is under a gear and haven't figured out how to pull one of these movements out of the case yet. Looks like these type movements were the only thing they used in these westclox. Guess that's why they called them dollar watches. They break and you just go buy another.

Hi there, I have a Pocket Ben Luminous, and I have a slight dilemma:
On the movement, i have four numbers priinted, in the ofollowing order:
2 0 54
but, my dilemma is the fact that the 0 is overprinted with a 3, and the 4, is overprinted with a 5.

Can anyone explain this to me?
I might be mistaken to the actuial numbers, due to my bad eyesight, but theytre definitely overprinted.
I have attached a picture of the movement.

Any info will be greatly appreciated.
