I like basic uncluttered dials, but I do prefer some hour markers…

About as plain as I like to go.

 

I like hour markers of some type. I'm not a fan of dials missing them, even when I otherwise really like the watch. For instance, I MUCH prefer the older version with markers, between these two:

 

I know the Moser on the left is made to a very high quality, but I can't help but think "cheap" when I see it. Something about entirely empty dials just screams "cheap mall fashion watch" in my mind.

 

Also... I've seen these called "sterile dials" ... not sure if that's any kind of standard term though.

 

I believe that "sterile" is generally used to refer to a dial with no logo/branding as opposed to a totally blank dial.

 

Have none completely empty but one close. This is as blank as I would want so I could still be accurate on setting the time. Otherwise I would only be able to set it 4 times an hour and onl by approximation.

Dial with no markers = jewelry
Dial with markers = wrist watch

I prefer to wear a wrist watch.

 

Wrist watch with no other timetelling devices around = tool
Wrist watch surrounded by other ways to tell time = jewelry

I prefer to wear a wrist watch myself, but I'm not interested in traveling back in time to when they were relevant...

I think it's kind of cool for whenever you're in a situation where telling the EXACT time isn't anywhere near the top of your list of priorities.

nobody needs the exact time most of the time. Anything within three or four minutes will do fine. Watch accuracy is a joke.

If I want to guess the time, I look at the sun or moon, as applicable.

 

I hate them. People can get hurt. They should be banned.

I need the indices to tell the time. I agree, any watch without them looks more like jewelry.

 

Nothing against them, but I consider them jewelry, not timepieces and you won’t find one in my collection.

 

i like the idiot's (thewatchidiot) dial. It has hands, markers for the hours and a really cool dial. the only thing that appears to be lacking is lume on the markers. I could see the concept one step further--a photo of the night sky and tritium markers and hands.

 

I have one watch without indices and I think it’s fine. I’ve seen enough watches to know how to tell the (general) time without indices. Ultimately it’s an individualistic thing but there’s definitely a market out there.

I kind of chuckle at most of the people here who can't figure out an imaginary straight line down the center of your strap and through the watch. Then go in increments of 90 degrees.

That's the long way of thinking it out.

Seriously, if you're an adult and you need markers to get within three minutes of the correct time, you got issues a watch won't solve

 

They don’t do anything for me. If someone asks you what time it is and you’re wearing one of those, about all you’ll be able to respond with is “time to get a watch…” are you’re not going to know what time it is either.

 

I think they work fine for dress watches in situations where telling the time was always meant to be secondary.

I've never had a watch without hour markers. I'd love to try one, but I won't spend 15k€ on a Moser. And I don't really like the Movados.

Any suggestions for an affordable alternative to give it a try? Must be mechanical and at least 42mm.

I am okay with it when you take into consideration what is meant by relevant time, which is: the time at which any rate is to be determined as specified in the final terms or if none is specified, at which it is customary to determine such rate.

 

As long as their some indicator if not I can't tell time on that thing if it is only showing me the hour and minute hand without indices.

I've seen dive watches that ridiculously omit the minute markers. Not sure why anyone would do that to any watch but totally perplexed why anyone would think a dive watch doesn't need minute markers.

For dive watches and military watches, I think minute markers are essential, but though I like minute markers aesthetically, as most people only make appointments for things using the the 5, 10, 15, 20... etc minute markers, the in-between ones are not really used a lot. No one says "Meet me at 3.23 pm/am", for instance.

I agree. It is the markers, indices etc that maketh the dial.

 

Clean and easy to read, and as long as there is lume present somewhere on the dial, I like them.

 

They can be pieces of art and elegance, my favorite examples are some of the Cartier Tanks. I hope to acquire one when I achieve scheduling nirvana with no deadlines, no commitments, and my stomach tells me the time.

 

Yes, they do look nice on tank watches, I must admit.
