What is the appeal of the Tissot Gentleman

Been seeing a lot of hype about it on WUS and Reddit.

It looks like a nice simple watch and it has silicium which is cool, but what makes it so popular?

Which color do you guys think is the best?
With a 40mm case and 48mm L2L, would it be too big on a 6.5" wrist?

Would you consider it a dress watch or is it GADA?

It looks more impressive in photos than it actually does in person. I saw one at an AD, and wasn't all that impressed. It looks like what it actually is, you're not getting a bargain Datejust by any means.

The $599 Joma price is fine, at $825 retail though, no. I think the Titoni Cosmo is far better for similar money.

Its quality will of course be a few levels below that of the Datejust, which is to be expected based on the price difference. However, the difference in quality is not as big as the difference in price (I am saying that as someone who has both a Gentleman and a Datejust). From 3 feet or more away, most people will not be able to tell the difference in quality. In fact, in my opinion, the Gentleman looks better than the Datejust 41 because the size of the Gentleman's bezel is more proportional the dial (i.e., not as thick).

I agree with you that Titoni Cosmo has better quality in general. However, the movement in the Cosmo is not as accurate as the Powermatic 80 in the Gentleman (I have 2 Cosmo King, both of which run about 8 seconds per day). This may or may not matter to people.

I think people like it because it is, as you said, a nice simple 3-hand watch. You can wear it almost anywhere. It is magnetic-resistant. It also has a very accurate movement. I have had one for three years. During the first year, it stayed within 1-2 seconds per day. Now it has drifted to about 4 seconds per day.

I like blue the best.

The watch is big, and it wears big. I would say that it will be right at the max of the range for your wrist.

When it's "hype" it's usually rather empty. It's not a terrible watch, it's just not special. It's "fine." Same with the Sinn 556, which is equally "fine" and not special at all. Not if you ask around here though, you will be told that the 556 is THE GREATEST WATCH EVER MADE. You know, other than all of the other hype watches around here which are equally the greatest ever.

I guess for one, the watch gets some attention because it is a Tissot. That means some brand recognition. The style is similar to an iconic watch so people find the size and shape pleasing. The watches had reliable quartz movements when they first came out, now they have the Powermatic 80 movement which most enthusiasts have heard of. Brand recognition, an attractive design, quartz or automatic, strap or bracelet, two tone options . No surprise that it is often spoken of.

It’s a good looking watch at a solid price.
I’m glad I read through the previous posts because this is what I was going to say. I don’t think anybody is going to say that it’s on par with a Datejust, Aqua Terra, etc., but it’s a darn good looking and well-made watch that you could buy instead of one of those and have a good chunk of a semester of college tuition left over.

Q, It looks like a nice simple watch and it has silicium which is cool, but what makes it so popular?
A. It's a nice simple watch featuring an 80-hour PR with a Silicon balance spring to boot.

Q. Which color do you guys think is the best?
A. There is no one particular colour that is the "best" for all the colours in the collection work equally well.

Q. With a 40mm case and 48mm L2L, would it be too big on a 6.5" wrist?
A. For some, they would see it as being too big, while others would see it as being just the right size for their wrist.

Q. Would you consider it a dress watch or is it GADA?
A. It can be worn either solely as a dress watch or it can be worn as a GADA.

It appeals to a a majority of people because of its case shape, size, simple dial configuration, brand with long history and price point. It is basically a GADA watch that you could dress up or dress down. Personally, I think it is like a jack of all trades, sporty enough but not to sporty that you could dress it by pairing with a nice leather strap. But sporty enough that when you put it in rubber or steel bracelet you could wear it on a jeans and shirt.

I also get why others don't like it. It doesn't really stand out. But I think most "GADA" watches are like that. My Rolex OP really doesn't stand out except for the brand recognition as it's design is simple. Of course build quality is a different criteria on its own but build quality can only be seen on close inspection.

It’s a GADA. While it lacks personality, it would be a perfect watch for a one watch guy.

There’s a women’s version too called.. Lady.

It's a good value watch. I purchased mine last year for less than $650. Over the past year, it's averaged less than +1 spd.
It's just a simple, classic-looking watch. I really like the bracelet as well.

I guess I get it, handsome, works for everyday and everything. But it’s also just so painfully boring. This is the kind of watch that makes me really wonder why you wouldn’t just use your phone.

as an aside, don’t list movement tech on the dial. Just put the silicium in the escapement and those who know will know. It looks awkward listed as a spec on the dial. I can’t imagine anyone who doesn’t know what that means even understands what that is trying to advertise.

I just don't see it myself. Hoosier's pictures show it best I think - there's a very awkward ratio between the dial, the lugs, and the dial (too much of the former two, and the dial in particular). The hands also look too large, especially towards the centre. While I don't really care for Monta, it's way better in this department, as well, not to mention the Titoni, which looks great to me. But they are just two watches out of hundreds that look good - I don't understand how the Gentleman scores so well on this front.

In my country we say "you can't argue over taste" ("Über Geschmack lässt sich nicht streiten").
Some people in mine say that, too, but it's always struck me that they then have precious little left to argue about. What are you going to argue about, facts?
