What's the fascination with the Casio F91W

It's a small, cheap (literally and figuratively), dated looking little watch that seems to get a disproportionately large amount of praise. It's not particularly water resistant and has fairly mundane features and functions. It literally offers nothing that would make me look at it twice.

Why do people feel this watch is so great? I'm just trying to understand why many people love this thing so much.

I don't get it.

I wish all could be as unique as you believe you are. What a way to antagonise people, so unnecessary and uncalled for.

I lived that era and I'm not inclined to go back. Not my thing at all. Giving off the nerd vibe is not something I want to project.
I'm ok with the first bit. The nerd vibe on the other hand, well, don't worry, 99.9% of people couldn't care less about what watch one is wearing, so there's that.

It's way too small. On the other hand, you can never be too cheap.

Notice how the pictures shown are real close-ups to make it look like it's a normal sized watch? It's not. Did I mention that it's way too small?
I'm already fascinated by some people complaining about watches being "too" small. Say too small for you, because wrists come in a wide variety of sizes. Also, some people, like me, like to wear small watches, and I can pull off 42mm just fine.

For me, it's the fact that for such a small amount of money, you get a watch that is retro cool and basically functions like watches that are much more expensive. Like if you pulled a compass or a mini tape measure from a capsule/gacha machine, you'd feel you got a lot for a little.

Cheap
Small
Light
Accurate
It can also handle being worn in swimming pools or lakes.
The perfect backup travel watch.

I think @Ginseng108 nailed it.

I like the fact that it does all the stuff more expensive watches do for $10. That's definitely part of the fascination.

Not to mention the fact that it weighs something like 29g. So you throw it on, immediately forget about it, and go about your day. You can beat it with impunity, swim in it, do whatever you do in a day and not give it another thought.

But I guess I'm just a sheep...

Simple. $12 nostalgia impulse purchase. Lots of us are old enough that this watch (or one very similar to it) was our daily driver back in the 1980s.

It's a grand complication (chronograph, perpetual calendar, and alarm) that is more accurate than any automatic chronometer and you can wear swimming... for less than the price of a bad meal. What's not to like?

It's been in production since 1989 and very popular, number 1 selling watch on amazon:

Casio has never provided sales figures for its watches, nor has it revealed its manufacturing output. That said, a commonly cited estimate holds that the company has been producing roughly 3 million F-91Ws a year. Production levels have certainly varied over the years, but that 3 million figure, multiplied by 30—the number of years the watch has been available—gives a ballpark estimate: 90 million F-91Ws shipped.

It's everything you need, nothing you don't. It's a design classic that's become a cultural touchstone.

I appreciate that's so lightweight and small. Sometimes (most of the time) I'm not in the mood for a 5 lb diver on my wrist.

If you don't like the looks, Casio sells about three dozen different models that offer metal construction, better backlights, different colors, etc.

For me, it is the nostalgia factor. I wore a F-91W daily in the 90s. Such a cheap and cheerful little companion, reliable and accurate, and at 20 grams, you don't know you have it on. I bought a new one last year and it instantly put a smile on my face. I don't wear it often, but when I do, the smile comes right back.

Exactly this. I wore one in the 90s too and earlier versions in the 80s. It’s almost like a comfort food. And I guess the implication is that this piece doesn’t really belong in a collection? I beg to differ. It’s a great digital to have in the watch box. Time tested and approved!

For a few bucks more, I’m all about the Royale.

These are cool too. I haven’t bought one yet, but it’s on my list.

I don't know that I'm fascinated with it but certainly a wonderful watch for a number of reasons. I think if I were able to travel around the world this might be the watch to wear. Does everything, easy to read, waterproof, lightweight, unpretentious, comfortable, and has a light. Maybe I am fascinated.
