Which size Planet Ocean?

Our 40th wedding anniversary is coming up this summer and I’m going to get a Planet Ocean 8900.
Funny thing, marriages. For 4 decades I’ve always made sure I found out what my wife wanted for birthday, Christmas, anniversary, etc, and made an effort to get that for her if I could. She (or the kids) would always ask me what I might want for special holidays, and I always answered honestly - Nothing, really. I have everything I want. Truth is I’m the kind of guy who just went and bought something if I wanted it or needed it (if I could afford to), didn’t wait for some special date on the calendar to do it, and was more concerned with making sure the family (all girls) were made to feel special when it came to holidays and such. I’m the dad who always got socks and was happy to get them.

So my wife was talking about our Big 40th a couple months ago and asked the standard question: Is there anything you’d like this year? I believe I startled her when I answered with “Yes, this”, and showed her a youtube video of the 8900 PO. After her initial shock at the price, she proclaimed that, after 40 years of socks and raising 5 girls, I deserved it. I was given the green light.

I’ve been pouring over videos and on line articles and, though I know exactly which watch I want (8900 black dial, on bracelet) I’m just stumped when it comes to which size watch I should get. There used to be an Omega boutique here in Sacramento but I believe it closed during covid and never reopened. I’m 6’2”, 240 pounds and have a 7 3/8” wrist, I tend to prefer 39-44mm watches with longer lugs. The Hamilton Khaki Field 42mm that so many feel is rather too big fits me perfectly, the Hamilton Intra-Matic chrono panda fits great, it’s 14.3 tall and definitely not too tall. Here’s what worries me about the 39.5 and 43.5 PO:

The 39.5 looks perfect as far as the diameter, height and visual balance with the bracelet goes, but I worry the short lug span will have the watch roaming around on my 7 3/8” wrist, and that it may feel a little top heavy with such a short lug span. The 43.5 looks like the lugs would cover and wrap the wrist wonderfully, but the 16 plus mm height concerns me. Does this just move from large watch to huge and too big? Any PO owners out there with who have physical similarities to me? I’d appreciate your feedback.

I’ll probably be looking to find a new or near new one in the 5K price range with box and papers, if anyone knows of a good source that too would be appreciated. I’ve been keeping an eye on chrono24.

The 39 is nice but might be a bit small for your wrist size. No real way of knowing unless you have the opportunity to try one on or compare them

The 8900's are great but can be on the thicker side as well, which some like and some don't, so shop around until you find the size that works best for you.

Good luck.

It sounds like you deserve the watch and CONGRATS on 40 years of marriage. I have a 43.5 black dial PLANET OCEAN on the bracelet and really like it. I understand that I am in the minority but I really like tall watches with wrist presence and the PLANET OCEAN definitely has that. It sounds like you do too at 6'2" tall and 240 pounds. IMO the 39 would look like a woman's watch on your >7" wrist. Good luck with your decision.

Yes, I always go by the dial size on how a watch looks on the wrist. Small dials/large bezels see to wear small for me even at a 44mm size (6'6", 8" wrist). But I like 39-42mm watches when the dial is large and the bezel, if any, is thinner. Also like thinner watches vs thick which I tend to bang on door frames. A matter of personal taste I suppose.

At your size and wrist, I would think 43.5. I have an 8 1/4 inch wrist and regularly wear watches that thick; whether that suits your or not is largely a matter of personal preference. It helps that I wear made-to-measure oxford shirts with the cuffs slightly widened to allow thicker dive watches to disappear.

I'm similar, I rarely ask my spouse or our (three) children for anything. No socks, but lots of sweaters 27 years in....I guess that would irk the sweater-hater who posted earlier.

Congratulations on the anniversary!

I was going to say the same thing, you’re not just choosing between watch dimensions, you’re choosing between movement functions.

8900 gets you a quick set hour hand
8800 gets you a quick set date

Based on your size and preferences with your other watches, the 43.5 is a no brainer. I tend to prefer smaller watches with a wrist just under 7 inches. I tried on a 39.5 and it just looked off. I think it's too thick compared to it's diameter.

It really would be best if you could try both on but if that's absolutely not possible I would go with the 43.5. I'm 99% certain you would prefer it.

43,5! I agree with the wrist presence, I think it will fit like a glove on you!
Congratulations on such a beautiful milestone.

I think you answered your own question. The 16.1 height of the PO is just too thick for me. I wouldn't wear that unless I am down at the resort or going into the water. Actually I wouldn't even buy it because of the thickness. The 39 PO doesn't make it any better still too thick. Dive watches are just big thick watches today. The first Gen PO was the best in my opinion, better proportions. The current movements are slightly better than first gen, but the old PO's ran well within COSC spec. The current fifty fathoms is a 45 and 15.4 thick. My opinion is try to keep it under 15mm My.02.

My wrist size is 8" and I prefer the 39.5 model. I also had the same watch in 43.5, but the smaller one is much more comfortable to wear. It is much lighter and wraps around the arm beautifully. It is the exact opposite of top heavy, which is more the case with the larger one.

If you get a chance, try them both on. I am quite sure that you will decide very quickly for the 39.5.

That 39mm fits you perfectly! I never thought I'd see a PO look so nicely proportioned on a wrist. I guess it's nice to have an 8 in wrist because those PO are stout! Love the design and style, but not the huge size.....very beautiful reference model.

I'm going to have a look at the 39. I've got a 7.5 wrist, but the last time I looked at the PO, it was a 43mm.....it was monstrous looking on my wrist ! ;)

I am same size all way around. I have a 44mm superocean on now. But it is thin under 13mm. When I get home I can take some wrists shots with my 14 mm black back and a 42mm superocean. Not pushing any brand just trying to show what I own and how they look or wear on me. Ultimately you will have to find a way to try something on yourself before you commit. The black bay does not feel thick when on wrist. I may go to look at another breitling tomorrow. That ad also sells omega. If they have the planet oceans on display I will try them on and take a picture. If my plans change tomorrow I'm sorry so don't hold me to it.

Also congrats on the 40 years of marriage.

I'm a new owner of a 43.5mm as of about a week ago. With the lugs being as short as they are, the 43.5 seems definitely the way to go for you. My wrists are 7.5" and it fits beautifully. Wouldn't want it smaller. Yeah its thick but the smaller watch is not much less.

But if you can, I would find a place that has both and experience each in person if thats at all possible.

I would reach out to this guy. Very reputable and this one is brand new with Omega warranty and AD papers.
