Why is my Protrek PRW S3000 1JF resetting?

Not Sure if this is the right forum, but In November of last year, I got the watch listed above. Its the Japanese import, stainless bezel, and about a month after I had it, it started to reset itself occasionally, all the way back to factory settings, including the date set to 2009 and everything. It was fully charged all times it happened, which was six times by the time I returned it through amazon for a refund. I only saw one other post about the prw 3000 reset, so I thought maybe it was just really rare. Well, I ordered another one, the exact same, but from a different seller. Less than 3 days after I got it, it reset itself. The battery indicator was on high and everything. Why is this happening? I've read that some watches have a problem with static electricity discharge resetting them, but is that what this is? or does it have some thing to do with the stainless bezel? there are literally thousands of reviews and no one seems to have this problem save 4 or 5 people, and I find it interesting that 2 out of 2 that I have owned have the same issue. . . .

I would be frustrated too. At worst, it renders the watch unusable. At best, it's very annoying.

If it's not static electricity causing this, could there be some environmental factor in your house, like EMI (electromagnetic interference) or RFI (radio frequency interference)? If you listen to an AM (medium wave) radio in different parts of the band, do you hear a loud buzzing or other strong noise that covers the desired signal? If so, maybe this RFI is being picked up by the Multiband 6 antenna in the watch and causing it to reset. On the other hand, if the watch syncs successfully most of the time, this may indicate a lack of strong RFI. Just throwing out thoughts.

In any event, I couldn't live with a watch that behaved the way yours does. Good luck finding a solution.

I don't listen to Am radio ever. It happened a couple times at night, I sleep with the watch on. I would wake up in the morning and it would be reset. Funny thing is that my first one, went over a month and had no problems, then it was fine after one reset for about another month, then it reset 4 times in 3 days

Just talked to Casio customer service and they said that it was an issue with some of the pro treks and they were still not sure what it was, but mostly magnets and static electricity. He said any model with I believe the number 3414 on the back was affected, which was on the back of mine. Looks like I'll be getting a prw3100 Instead

Static electricity seems to be the culprit. Today I took my 3000 on a hike, which I bought only a few days ago. On the way up everything on the watch was good. Somewhere on the way down I took off a wool layer against another wool base layer. The two usually generate a lot of static charge against each other. Some time after that I glanced down and the watch had reset itself to 1.1.2010. I returned the watch to Amazon. My Suunto never had this issue in the two years I had it.

I wonder if anyone had the resetting problem with the less popular PRG-300?

According to previous posts in the thread, this is a problem with some PRW-3000 (module 3414) models. It implied the PRW-3100 (module 3444) was not affected. The PRG-300 uses module 3443, so maybe it's OK too.

Edit: The PRW-3100 has the new STN display, which has a very wide viewing angle, so it might be worth considering.

I have the PRG 270 with the 3415 module. Every time I took off my fleece jacket in the winter, it would reset. Casio customer service told me that happens due to static electricity, so sorry, they said. It's a great watch so I just take it off before I take my jacket off. Fortunately, our winter only lasts about a month and a half here in Texas!

I had issues with my prw-3000 resetting (sometimes multiple times a day), returned it. I ordered a PRW-3100 and couldn't be happier- over a month and no resets. The STN negative display is also very nice and much easier to read then the prw-3000 negative display in all lighting conditions. For whatever reason, the time syncs much more reliably on the 3100 as well.

I just bought a Casio Protrek Model 3415 about a month ago and have experienced this same problem twice. The first time was within 1 day of unpacking it. I pressed one of the buttons and the watch zeroed its memory. Being a very new watch, I chalked that up to potential user error but made a mental note to watch out for it. Second time was yesterday when I looked at the watch but as soon as I pressed the Baro button, it zeroed its memory again. I had done about 5 hours of driving--a couple of those during daylight hours--so the watch should have been fully charged and did display "H" for about a week now.

So, I'm just asking anyone if Casio has fixed this problem (i.e. did Amazon just sell me old stock from their shelves, but newer products don't have this problem?) or should I look for another brand/model of watch?

I also find that I always have to override the barometric pressure when this happens. The sensor in the watch is about 150 millibars lower than the local weather reports.

I was contemplating a PRW-3000 purchase until I heard about the static-induced reset problem. I contacted Casio about the PRW-3100, to find out if it was susceptible to the static reset problem experienced by some PRW-3000 (and PRG-270) owners. They acknowledge the problem and said that they have not had any reports of this problem occurring with the PRW-3100 (they also noted that they have a fix for the problem with the PRW-3000 and would replace the watch under warranty if static-induced reset was occurring.)
