Winding mechanism stuck

Hello everyone,

I recently inherited my great-grandfather's pocket watch. Looks-wise, it is in pristine condition, but the problem is the mechanism.
The problem is that I can turn the crown maybe a quarter of a spin. Then it suddenly won't let me "wind" it further and I don't want to force anything.
I am not a watch specialist or anything but I might think it has something to do with the big gear (main spring if I am not mistaken).
I also have a video but for some reason can't upload it.
Sorry for the grammar, but English is my third language.

Thank you in advance

I assume it's not running? Or if so will only tick for a few seconds?

People used to refer to this as "overwound", when you are unable to turn the crown to wind the watch. Typically it's due to the mainspring already being fully wound and as such not allowing for anymore turns.

As the movement won't run it doesn't have a chance to uncoil the mainspring through it's typical function.

With a pocket watch, typically this means a broken balance staff or cracked jewel... but it could be something as simple as just needing a good cleaning to get going again.

Any watch repair center should be able to diagnose the specific problems quite easily.

Good luck and enjoy the care taking of your grandfathers watch!
