(this is a post I originally made in the main public forum, now finding this forum that is specifically made for watch making I am reposting it here)

So I am in the process of servicing a watch and I have come near to the point to start purchasing some lubricants for the reassembly process. I have most of the lubricants picked out but when looking at the breaking grease for the mainspring barrel (this is an automatic watch) I have only found the very expensive Kluber P125. So I am just wondering if there are any substitutes for this grease or places to get this grease cheaper than the 119 dollars it's currently listed for. I am aware that these lubricants and greases arn't cheap but this seems a bit excessive for a 5 gram bottle.

Thanks for your help everybody :)

The classic braking greases from Moebius are 8212, also known as Glissalube B, 8213, also known as Glissalube A, and 8217 aka Glissalube 20.

Glissalube A is optimized for use in brass barrels, the B is optimized for aluminum barrels (easy to remember "B is not for brass", haha). The Glissalube 20 is a general braking grease, and should work fine for general hobby use. The Kluber is a high performance grease, and like their other lubricants carries a high performance price tag. In practice, I think you will find that 8217 Glissalube 20 will work just fine.

A 20ml bottle is 18 pounds at Cousins, and 40 bucks at Esslinger. Probably cheaper to stick with the U.S. supplier in spite of the higher unit price.

I was under the impression that HP-1300 could be used as a barrel grease for automatics.
Am I wrong in this thinking?
HP-1300 is a thick oil, that could be used on the spring body, sparingly so that it doesn't creep over and contaminate the braking grease on the barrel wall (though new springs are pre-lubricated with a dry lubricant and don't need further lubrication), but it's not a braking grease and would have no braking properties if used on the barrel wall.

ah ok, thanks. I will definitely check out the mobius 8212.

Geeze, I'm getting old and my memory is going. I just looked and I have a jar of the 8217 I also looked at my notes and find that 8217 is what I have used for braking grease in the last two autos I have serviced. The HP-1300 I used on the barrel arbor contact points to the main plate...DUH!
