Panerai? Worth giving it a shot?

I'm on the ever waitlist for a sub (or Exp2 polar). Both have insane waitlist at my AD (I was qouted 8 months to a year). Losing interest in Rolex altogether. I've been on the waitlist since June and rep just told me that they've only received under 40 subs all year around and waitlist is like 300 people. Hinted that I purchase something in order to get bumped up the waitlist.

I own Omega sea master (sold now) but nothing else from Omega is my cuppa tea. Planet Ocean is thick and bulky. Speedy is nice but no date, and really low WR (single gasket on the crown only and my AD said they don't even recommend swimming with it in case the pushers accidently gets pushed). The Aquaterra line doesnt appeal to me.

I checked out Panerai recently (AD was 2 stores down from Rolex) and really liked some of the offering, especially 42mm. However, the pricing seems on par with Rolex but appears brand has no resale value (grey market is like 20-40% cheaper than retail). Also, not sure of their movements but I do like their unique case design and sandwich dials. Ebay and grey market is full of used Panerai that I can spend days browsing page after page.

I've come across few Panerai FS listings and after chatting, some are people with Rolex and Panerai and sold the Panerai...

Whats the general consensus of the forum here for Panerai? If I do get something, I'll prefer to buy it brand new from a AD (not sure what type discounts they give).

Cheers.

Their styling is a love it or hate it type of thing, but I don't think there is any doubt they are a quality watch. If you like the styling I'd say go for it.

And I wouldn't hold the lack of resale value against the brand. The vast majority of watches have crap resale value. Doesn't (necessarily) mean there's something wrong with them.

I never understood panerai till i bought one just bcs it was too good a deal. Now i have 2 and i absolutely love them and they get more wrist time than my other watches.

Good thing abt the low resale is that you get great deals on used ones. And since they are built like a rock... You might as well take advantage of that. I have bought and sold 2 other panerais and made some money on both sales. But now i regret selling the pam00177 cause it was such an awesome titanium luminor.

the fact that you’re thinking about paying Panerai money for a watch you don’t seem that enthusiastic about is a recipe for king-term disappointment.

On the one hand, if you love the look of a Panerai, there’s no substitute. This, if there was a PAM you’re obsessed with? I’d say go for it. But you’re clearly not in that camp.

for you, who desires a Rolex enough to sit on a Rolex waitlist, you’re probably going to end up jonesing for a Rolex in no time because for those who want a rolex, Nothing else will do in the long run. Better to wait out your submariner dream than end up owning a Panerai you only feel lukewarm about. You want that crown. Get what you want, not what you have to settle for.

For those that appreciate and get Panerai, it is easy. I love the brand, the Italian flair, the history and the style of theor more traditional PAMs. I will probably keep my Luminor Marina forever...it has been around the globe with me on great adventures and it’s just plain cool in my opinion!
^^ This.

Good to see another early PAM111 from the times before the sandwich dial! :D(y)

I personally love the PAM style, I’ve probably built more homages than I can count, but even as my own buying power has increased these days I still don’t know that I believe Panerai is worth what they ask. I don’t totally have a reason for that, but it’s just me. Some of the models used to be, less so now, just so simple that a good homage was basically the same thing as a gen. They’ve done a good job differentiating themselves in the last 10 years from that statement, but I still just have a hard time mentally equating their core models with $5k+. I think it’s definitely an X Factor that you just have to “get”, and if you don’t get it, it’s just never going to make sense to you.

but overall I would say that I already probably wouldn’t buy one based on the description thus far in this case as it doesn’t seem like you’re in love with any of them. Practical concerns are important but boy howdy at Rolex money the watch you buy better be really, really compelling to you personally or all the features and wearability in the world is going to seem like a let down at 8 grand. The question to me would need to be “why shouldn’t I go to the AD tomorrow morning and buy this watch that I can’t stop thinking about?”

i would expand horizons a bit. Rolex is the base line. It’s mac and cheese with the powder sauce. Omega is a pb and j. Looking panerai is a good shake up from the next aisle over but surely there’s something out there that just screams to you in such a way that resale isn’t the first objection you have. We’re looking for emotion here, I think.

I have been a watch lover for a while now. I currently own Tag Heuer, Breitling, Zenith, IWC, Omega, JLC, Vacheron Constantin, and Rolex, including the latest Sub and Polar. I considered Panerai for a few years until I recently pulled the trigger and purchased one. Let me tell you, I cannot get that freaking watch off my wrist, I love the feel, the look, the endless straps possibilities. I am seriously considering selling most of my watches, including the Rolex, and just getting 2 maybe 3 more Panerai. It's not just the honeymoon phase, cause I had been thru that with all my timepieces before. It's just something about Panerai, now I fully understand the Paneristi.

They have a certain 'je ne sais quoi' which in my opinion is their versatility. Dive watch with no bezel that can be a casual or dressy watch depending on the strap. While I don't own a Panerai, I wouldn't shy away from one if it came my way at the right time and the right price. I particularly like the blue of the PAM01033.

Not my pic.

I have a LE Panerai that i went to great trouble to acquire, and i quite like it. However, IMO, unless the history of Panerai as a diving watch matters a lot to you, there are other, better watches out there for the money.

I also have a polar Explorer II and for me, it stomps all over the Panerai. It is an amazingly versatile watch that really does everything: I have taken it hiking in the glaciers of Central Asia, to nice dinners and everything in between.

(If it helps with the waiting, I am considering a Czapek and i have been told it's a 2 year wait to get on the waitlist - and then however long it takes to get the watch)

Mike Margolis from Czapek Americas here. Our order books will open up at Watches and Wonders 2023, last week of March. Those newly ordered watches should deliver in 2024.

PM me if I can help

Love the look and the design. But their movements don’t wow me. I too find the prices to be high considering. However, the blue Marina is so nice and I’ve been tempted so many times.

Also, good on you for not playing those insane AD games. I won’t be buying any fancy crown watches as long as these types of things exist. Gotta wait a bit, fine. Encouraging you to buy more to move up, kiss my white behind.

You sound very concerned with resale value, stick with Rolex.

Buying BNIB from an Ad on any other make is gonna catch you a cold on resale.

All bar one of my Pams have been bought LNIB from a respected source, and then the big depreciation is your friend not your enemy.

Yup, another one

I'm now finding it difficult to remember a time when the majority of posts weren't about financial performance and metrics. God it's dystopian.

OP, it sounds like you're interested in money rather than style, or buying what you like. Stick with Rolex assets; it doesn't matter which underlying instrument, they all perform better than Panerai, that's the most important thing.

I like the design, I really do. The 42mm ones fit me well and I could even get away with the 44mm references. But there are three things that keep me off ever buying one:
  • Quality. There's a reason why it's so hard to tell if you bought a replica. Their finish would be OK if they were half the price. For the premium they charge? No way. I've tried several and all I can say I've been more impressed with the finish of Seikos that are below 1000€.
  • Lies. From the history of the brand (today's Panerai isn't really Panerai) to the whole movements extravaganza. I don't get how some watch enthusiasts say they love the "heritage and history" of watches and then buy Panerai.
  • Souless Big corp behind the brand. Kind of connected to the previous point, and to be fair, that goes for a lot of brands. But I've decided to not buy from any brand that belongs to a big group like Swatch, Richemont or LVMH. That limits my choices but I'm OK with that.
