Preferred size will vary widely by an individual's tastes, as well as wrist size. I have small wrists and prefer a more classic watch aesthetic, so my ideal watch size tops out at about 40mm for something like a diver. 35-38mm would be more ideal for a dress watch. There is a dearth of selection of small and mid-sized watches, though, so the actual size range of my collection is more like 37-43mm, plus a couple vintage pieces at 34-35mm.

 

The perfect size for a watch is the one that fits your wrist so well that when you first put it on you invariably get a smile.

 

It absolutely depends on the watch. Thick bezels with small diameter dials will often make a watch appear (or wear) smaller than a smaller watch that is almost all dial.

It's difficult to give a hard and fast ruling on the size. The only real way is for the wearer to try the watch on and see if it fits the wrist.

I've found 39-40mm to be my sweet spot, and although it does vary based on the watch, my favorites in terms of size are in that range.

It seems to be generally accepted that dive watchers should be larger, which I think is kindof too bad because they tend to make them larger, and a lot of them are too big for me

 

I generally like watches in the 38 to 40 range. I have a 7.25 inch wrist.

 

I prefer 36-42mm but I have a dive watch at 44mm that wears smaller than its stated size.

Dress: 39mm
Chronograph: 40-42mm
Diver: 42-45mm

 

Whatever your heart desires for any of these, but I think anything over 50mm (probably more like 48mm) looks massively tacky imho.

 

I can tell you a perfect shape, not a size.

 

46mm minimum ..... I don't wear anything smaller then that. I don't have small wrists but no matter how nice a watch looks in the box, if it looks small on my wrist I won't like it. If you gave me a 42mm Omega I wouldn't like it ..... I'm being dead serious. It may sound stupid but at 6'7" with bigger wrists a small watch doesn't look right on me in my head.

 

I think it depends on the "size" of the man wearing it. The same design of a watch,may look small,normal or large,depending on the overall size (height,weight) of the person wearing it.

 

It's all preference I guess. I'm int the smaller sizes myself. I obsess endlessly on research regarding the watch I'm considering buying, I trawl through images on google of on the wrist shots of the watch to ascertain if it'll fit my wrist.

 

It depends on your own personal preference. If you like a big modern oversized watch, then wear one. If you like a classic undersized watch then wear one.

This is relative to wrist size and era. Preference for larger time pieces have grown over many years.

 

8" wrist
dress watch ... 37mm
diver watch ... 40mm
casual watch... 38mm
sport watch... 40mm

 

Minimum 50mm.

 

If you don't have the IWC Heritage 55mm on order (being released this year) you don't have squat. With that said, my 7 1/4" wrist never met a 40mm watch that it didn't like.

 

The watch sizes we perceive as being attractive and correct are influenced to a great degree by current fashions. Those fashions are reflected in advertising of the time. Check out the 33mm to 35mm ruggedly stylish Bulova Commander watches in this nautically themed ad from 1965.

 

I would say focus more on the lug to lug - I have had 45mm watches on a 7 1/4" wrist that fit great when lug to lug is 50mm. Once I got past 52mm they feel too big. Sweet spot is 43mm case IMHO.
